By Emily Lucas, Co-Owner, Guide, and Master Naturalist, Teton Excursions
Yellowstone has always been an American rite of passage. We see it every day: grandparents who first visited in the 1960s now bringing their grandkids to see the same geysers and grizzly bears. It is so wonderful to be a part of it.
We know that a trip here is rarely just a vacation. It is usually a milestone—an anniversary, a graduation, or sometimes, that one last big trip a family takes together before life changes. These moments are important, and they can be a lot to plan. Our goal at Teton Excursions is to take all that weight off your shoulders so you can simply be present with the people you love.
The Teton Excursions Way
- Being in the Moment: We handle the camera so you can enjoy the experience.
- Never Leaving Your Side: We are in the field with you at every stop, showing you all the cool stuff, not waiting in the van.
- Bringing Nature Home: Using our professional optics to capture the details of the wild for you.
- The AirDrop Gift: Your full digital gallery is delivered for free before you even leave our van.
1. Capturing the Reveal: Memories in Motion
Most people leave the park with photos of their family standing in front of a waterfall. We want to give you something more—something that captures the feeling of awe when you first see the scale of the canyon.
Because we know these trails and viewpoints so well, we help stage “cinematic reveals.” We’ll have your family stand at a specific overlook, and we’ll record the moment you turn to see the falls. We aren’t trying to be film directors; we just want you to have a moving memory of that exact second the park took your breath away.

2. Bringing the Wild Closer: Professional Details
Yellowstone is one of the last best ecosystems on the planet. As Master Naturalists, we want to show you the “velvet” on an elk’s antlers or the focused gaze of a bison in the grass.
We use Vortex Spotting Scopes and Ollin Magnetic Mounts because they allow us to document these wild details directly onto a smartphone. You don’t have to worry about the settings or the focus. We set the gear, you enjoy the view on the screen with your family, and we capture the high-definition portraits for you to keep.

3. No Parent Left Behind: Our Commitment to Presence
The biggest downside to being the family photographer is that you’re never actually in the photos. You’re always behind the lens, missing the smiles and shared glances; you’re not standing with your people.
On our tours, we are with you at every boardwalk and every overlook. We don’t stay in the van. We act as your dedicated photographer for the day so that the whole family is included in every shot. For families celebrating a milestone, even if it is getting to take one last trip together, this is the most important service we provide. We want to make sure your family legacy is documented, from the youngest kids to the grandparents, in the most beautiful places in the park.

4. A Seamless Gift: From Our Family to Yours
We’ve been asked why we don’t charge for these photos or put them on a site for you to buy later. The truth is, we just don’t think that’s the right way to treat people.
We care about your journey, and we want you to leave feeling looked after and comfortable. Giving you these photos is our way of saying thank you for letting us be part of your family’s tradition.
Every December, we get Christmas cards in the mail from past guests. Seeing a photo we took in the middle of summer sitting on someone’s mantel in December is the ultimate compliment. It means that moment stayed with you. Before you leave our van, we AirDrop the entire collection of photos and videos directly to your phone—a free, instant gallery of your day in the wild.

Expert Guide Q&A: The Heart of the Journey
Q: Why do you put so much effort into capturing these photos for your guests?
Emily Lucas: “Yellowstone is a rite of passage for many families. I want to make sure it is captured with the same vibrancy it deserves, so you can look back years from now and feel exactly what it was like to be here.”
Q: What is your favorite part of being the field photographer for the day?
Emily Lucas: “Opening the mail in December and seeing a family’s Christmas card featuring a photo we took in July is the ultimate compliment. It tells me that the memory we helped create actually stuck and is being shared with everyone they love.”
Q: Do you ever get tired of visiting the same ‘natural studios’ in the park?
Emily Lucas: “Never. The light and the wildlife change daily, but more importantly, the families change. Seeing a grandfather witness the Lower Falls for the first time through his grandson’s eyes never gets old.”
Guest Q&A: The Essentials of Your Experience
A: Not at all. We take care of everything. We just want you to be comfortable and enjoy the scenery.
Absolutely not. We don’t believe in hidden fees for your own memories. Providing this digital gallery is a core part of the value we provide on every Teton Excursions private tour. We believe documenting the trip is part of taking care of our guests.
A: We AirDrop them directly to your phone before you leave the van at the end of the trip. It’s seamless, fast, and high-resolution.
A: No problem at all! The easiest way is for us to AirDrop the gallery to a family member who does have an iPhone, and they can share them with you later.
